I understand the need for equitable economic development that benefits everyone in our community. I will advocate and work hard for mixed-income housing initiatives with a push for inclusionary housing legislation to ensure our neighbors are not displaced. Public transportation with improved bus routes and infrastructure, the creation of decent paying, high quality jobs through allocation of county funds, and investment in workforce development for working class individuals are areas I will keep at the forefront and fight for. Our community deserves more resources as opposed to tax breaks for corporations or developers. Small businesses are the backbone of our community, and policies are necessary that proactively support women and minority owned businesses and entrepreneurs. Our community needs inclusive economic development that ensures that all residents have access to a healthy and prosperous quality of life.
For the past 4 1/2 years my experience in healthcare and understanding of the social determinants of health have led me to where I am now. Policy is the driver and heavily impacts health outcomes of our communities. Our community should be healthy, and government plays a critical role in creating access and awareness to healthcare resources. The resources, access, and support that exists around healthcare is something I will advocate and strive to change and improve for all residents of our community. COVID-19 has proven to be detrimental to our constituency on many levels, I will work to create better access to testing and vaccinations.
There is an undeniable connection between communities that are predominately low-income or of color and adverse environmental factors that impact the health and wellbeing of its residents. There has been advocacy work around anti-fracking with Danskammer, and Newburgh residents have been impacted by contaminated water. I will be be an advocate to ensure that decisions aren‘t made in the interest of a company, but rather in the interest of our community. Residents in both the city and town of Newburgh deserve better environmental decisions for their quality of life. Furthermore, I am in full support and understanding of the importance of green spaces in our community as well as urban farming and other sustainable initiatives that can also aid economic development and food insecurity.
The connection between racism and police brutality has impacted many communities across the country. Unfortunately, our community is not an exception and many residents have experienced being profiled, overpoliced, or mistreated by law enforcement. Law enforcement is meant to serve and protect the community, and I recognize the need for changes at the core of policing. These changes must come in the form of trainings and changes in policy that reflect accountability and culture change. Social justice is not about reacting it is about being proactive and preventing further injustices in our community.
For over two years, I developed positive youth development programming as well as worked to expand access to sexual and reproductive healthcare to youth. Orange County youth have some of the largest percentages of sexually transmitted infections in the state, further preventative programming is needed. A young person’s community is very important to their growth, success, and development. Therefore, I will be dedicated to securing resources for youth to be able to have after-school programming, workforce development, and recreational activities.
Arts & Culture are not just recreation or entertainment, there are many talented and gifted individuals in our community who don’t often get a platform or access to express their creativity. Art ties into social justice, education, and economic development. I will keep initiatives that can aid our artist community, as well as projects that can enhance our community's beauty at the forefront of community development.
